Google Commits $1.1 Million to Fort Wayne Water Reuse Project as Indiana Investment Reaches $10 Million

Google is committing $1.1 million to Fort Wayne City Utilities for a water reuse project designed to reduce withdrawals from the St. Joseph River, making the Northeast Indiana city the first recipient of a larger $10 million statewide investment in water stewardship.

The announcement, reported this week by 21Alive News, WBOI and Inside INdiana Business, comes as Google’s Fort Wayne data center becomes operational and the company continues expanding its presence in the region. The investment connects a major technology project with upgrades to public water infrastructure that serves local residents and businesses.

Fort Wayne Project Targets Water Reuse

The funding will support improvements at the Three Rivers Filtration Plant, where City Utilities processes water for the community. The project focuses on handling lime residuals created during the drinking-water softening process before those materials are sent to the city’s Biosolids Facility.

According to Fort Wayne City Utilities, the improvements are expected to allow more water to be reused within the treatment process. That could reduce withdrawals from the St. Joseph River by approximately 180 million gallons each year.

The project is also expected to improve operating efficiency. City officials estimate the changes could save about $150,000 annually in treatment, pumping and water-transportation costs, potentially helping limit pressure on future utility rates.

A Broader Indiana Water Investment

Google said its total $10 million commitment will support water filtration plants, infrastructure and access projects in communities across Indiana. The company described the investment as part of its effort to responsibly manage water resources in areas where it operates data centers.

For Fort Wayne, the first grant gives the city an opportunity to modernize an important piece of its water system while addressing concerns about long-term demand. The project could also offer a model for how industrial investment and municipal infrastructure improvements can work together when a community is managing growth.

The announcement arrives during an active period for Google’s southeast Fort Wayne campus. Developers have filed another request with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to fill 2.13 acres of isolated, forested wetlands for three additional data center buildings. A public hearing on that request is scheduled for Aug. 25.

What the Project Means for Fort Wayne

The water reuse improvements are not a new water source, but they could help Fort Wayne get more value from the water already moving through its treatment system. Reducing river withdrawals also supports the city’s broader effort to protect local resources while maintaining reliable service for households, employers and future development.

The project will unfold over the next couple of years as the city works through implementation and construction details. Additional statewide recipients of Google’s water investment are expected to be announced as projects move forward.
